The education system in Mauritius has been largely inspired by the British education system, with public schools using English as the principal medium of instruction. While public primary schools are free, there is also a network of private and international primary schools that follow international curriculums. International schools are a popular choice for the expatriate community as they offer similar standards of schooling around the globe, which also assists a child’s smooth integration and transition in a new environment and have school holidays aligned with home-country holidays.

Secondary education in public institutions is free and the curriculum is accredited with the Cambridge University. Also, reputable private and international secondary institutions present on the island are accredited with the International Baccalaureate or the French Baccalaureate. School leavers and students outside the academic stream may also opt for pre-vocational training or vocation education.

The realm of tertiary education is constantly evolving as programmes from international prestigious universities complement free courses offered by publicly funded institutions.
