Knowing about the healthcare system in the host country is an essential component in planning different aspects of a new life as an expatriate. Rest assured, Mauritius has over the years developed a competent health care system supported by quality medical infrastructures and facilities. While the public health system is built upon the principle of universal access to free health care services, private institutions and global healthcare players, present on the island, parallelly offer state-of-the-art medical care.

The country’s public health infrastructure comprises 5 major public hospitals offering general services, 6 public hospitals each specialised in Mental health care, Cardiology, Orthopedics, ENT, Eye care and Chest as well as also various area health centers and mediclinics, proximate to communities across different regions.

Also, there are 18 private clinics and 11 specialised centers offering paid services and patients usually subscribe to medical insurance plans that offer different coverage plans. Likewise, expatriates from France can avail to social security benefits (Caisse des Français à l’Etranger) with approved private health institutions in Mauritius. Pharmacies are also numerous on the island.

The health workforce is the pillar of the healthcare system with the vast majority of medical practitioners having undergone their training programmes in reputable European and foreign medical universities. Medical institutions in Mauritius also employ foreign medical practitioners across a range of specialties. Moreover, the Medical profession is regulated by the Medical Council of Mauritius which ensures that healthcare practices commensurate with highest international quality and standards.   

Besides, vaccination against yellow fever is not compulsory if one is coming from Europe, North America, Oceania or Asia, and there is no risk of malaria.
